McKinney Boyd’s girls soccer team, ranked No. 1 in the ESPNHS Fab 50, has already begun its 2012 campaign after winning its second state title in four years last season.

With the players who return, Boyd remains a frontrunner to bring another state title back to North Texas.

The biggest change for Boyd this year is on the sidelines.After one of North Texas’ most successful coaches, Jimmie Langford, resigned from Boyd to take a job coaching a boys team in Colorado, the reigns of the defending champs were given to Michele Estes.

The transition might not be as difficult as it sounds. Estes simply moved into the head coaching role after spending years as an assistant coach under Langford.Not much strategically has changed in Boyd’s play under Estes, but it’s intangibles that the new coach emphasizes to her players.“

She’s brought a more competitive atmosphere,” senior striker Amanda Elertson said. “She’s trying to ignite the team more. We’ve lost players from last year, so we need to find a chemistry this year that will make us as successful as last year.”

Before practices and games, Boyd breaks out to the cheer “We are one” to put teamwork and team chemistry in the front of the players' minds as they move through the season, preparing for another playoff run.It’s that personal connection with the team that Elerton values in Estes, which in turn is what Estes wants to spread amongst the team.“She knows your personality,” Elertson said. “If you’re struggling, she knows what’s best to help pick you up and get you going, and I think it’s really good to have a coach that knows you.”

Elertson is one of many Boyd players who participates year-round by playing club soccer outside of the school team. Estes believes this creates a business-like attitude that prevents true chemistry from forming. Estes hopes she can create a more personal connection amongst the Boyd team, which is something the players rarely have the opportunity to form on club squads.Boyd will have another tough road to state again this year with five North Texas girls teams ranked in the top 10 in the Fab 50 as of Jan. 8.

The 5A state runner-up, Colleyville Heritage, ranks No. 3 in the nation in the Week 6 poll, behind Coppell. Ursuline Academy ranks No. 4 as it looks to continue its dynasty in the state’s private school ranks.

North Texas has the chance to make a strong push on the boys side, as well, with the efforts being led by defending 5A state champion Southlake Carroll. Carroll entered the 2012 season with a 31-match undefeated streak that is the second longest active streak in the nation.

The surprise team to watch for is Hebron, which is ranked No. 12 in the nation as of Jan. 8, just one spot ahead of district rival Allen at No. 13.

The perennial powerhouse, Frisco Wakeland, comes in at No. 14, looking to sandwich a girls state title last season with a boys title in 2010.But 2012 has the chance to be the season of Boyd in soccer, with a boys team that ranks No. 9 in the Fab 50, competing with the girls side for the higher national ranking when all is said and done.

The girls, of course, are winning the battle so far, and have the will and drive to repeat last season’s success.

“Everone on this team is competitive and everyone wants to win,” Elertson said. “They have that drive and desire, and I think we can be as successful.”

FORT WORTH, Texas – Before their final match, Rachel Lurvey and Courtney Forte entertained the crowd with an impromptu dance. Once the contest started, teammates Katelyn Mountjoy and Baylee Mitchell took center stage, scoring goals as Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas) upended Ursuline Academy (Dallas, Texas) 2-0 at Texas Christian University to complete a 4-0 run through the National Elite Prep Showcase on Saturday.

Marcus, Carroll (Southlake, Texas) and Keller (Texas) were the only schools to win all four of their matches at the mixer-style event that featured 32 teams representing the three major winter-playing soccer states: California, Florida and Texas.

“We have the mentality to take state, and that’s motivating us,” said Mitchell, whose final minute breakaway goal – created by a well-played pass from right back Dani Murphy -- sealed the 2-0 victory.

Marcus defeated Murrieta Valley (Murrieta, Calif.), Martin (Arlington, Texas) and Midland (Texas) to set up the showdown with Ursuline, which entered the contest at 13-0.

The match was scoreless midway through the second half until Mountjoy, a junior and early commit to UNC-Greensboro, placed a 25-yard direct kick in the upper right corner – kissing the post before ending up in the goal.

“This was a very strong victory for us,” Mountjoy said. “Ursuline, in the past, won a lot of state titles, so we knew we shouldn’t under-estimate them. We were way more aggressive.”
Marcus entered the event ranked No. 31 in the POWERADE FAB 50, but the win over No. 4 Ursuline will vault the Marauders into the top five next week.

POWERADE FAB 50 IMPLICATIONS

The National Elite Prep Showcase is the only event that gathers teams from three states, and thus the results play a major part in shaping the rankings not only for this coming Tuesday but also the rest of the season.

The top four teams in the POWERADE FAB 50 were in action in this event, and here are the major winners and losers:

" No. 1 Boyd (McKinney, Texas) allowed a last-second goal in a 2-2 event-ending draw with No. 28 Grapevine (Texas). The result likely will cost Boyd the top ranking next week, although the Broncos will be among the top five.

" No. 2 Coppell (Texas) tied its final two matches to end 2-0-2. A win over St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) will keep the Cowgirls among the nation’s elite, although it will drop from the top five.

" No. 3 Heritage (Colleyville, Texas) went 0-2-2 at the event and will fall completely from the rankings.

" No. 4 Ursuline’s event-ending loss to Marcus will bump this program from the top five, however, solid wins over American Heritage-Delray (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Kingwood (Humble, Texas) will keep the Bears ranked fairly high.

" No. 8 Carroll not only went 4-0, but also shut out all four opponents. This team figures to move into the forefront of the national title race.

" No. 13 St. Thomas Aquinas. Last year, the Raiders used this event to propel themselves toward a POWERADE FAB 50 national title. This year’s youthful squad went 2-1-1, and will remain a Top 25 team.

" No. 18 American Heritage-Delray. Coach Steve Burgess welcomed the challenge of the event and this small school Florida power, which entered at 17-0, will go home 18-2-1 after a 1-2-1 showing.

" Rosary (Santa Ana, Calif.) went 2-1-1, a good showing for a team that entered as No. 38 in the ESPNHS California Top 40. Rosary previously was a FAB 50 top 20 team until a loss and a draw right before the event knocked them from the rankings. Rosary tied St. Thomas Aquinas and the team’s only setback was to Southlake Carroll. That sort of showing speaks well for the quality of play in California, as a whole.

" Keller was a big surprise, going 4-0 while playing in the Baylor SportsCare Bracket, which was the second-highest competitive group.

" Flower Mound (Texas) posted a 3-1 record, losing only to Rosary, which should be good enough to earn the team a state top 20 ranking.

PLAYERS OF THE DAY

" McKenna Arras, Coppell (Texas): Coppell was unable to capitalize on any of its numerous offensive chances, so it was up to keeper McKenna Arras to keep Allen (Texas) out of the net. Arras delivered several saves and came off the line a few times to snuff out potential chances to help Coppell play to a scoreless draw.

" Katelyn Mountjoy, Marcus. The junior scored what proved to be the winning goal in Marcus’ 2-0 victory over Ursuline. It was her third goal of the day (after scoring two in a morning win over Midland) and fifth in the four matches.

" Sophie Groff, Carroll. Groff scored the lone goal in the team’s event-ending 1-0 win over Clear Lake (Houston, Texas) to complete a 4-0 showing at the event. Groff scored the only goals in the 1-0 wins over Westlake (Austin, Texas) and Clear Lake, assisted both goals in a 2-0 win over Rosary and was limited to two in the team’s 12-0 thrashing of Palo Duro (Amarillo, Texas).

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Coach Michele Estes inherited the McKinney Boyd (McKinney, Texas) girls’ soccer program, knowing there was plenty of top-end talent remaining from last year’s Texas Class 5A state championship-winning team. This weekend, Estes is finding even more firepower than expected.Although Nebraska commit Amanda Elertson has yet to score, POWERADE FAB 50 No. 1 Boyd has received goals from four players en route to 3-0 and 2-0 victories in their first two matches at the National Elite Prep Showcase. During Friday’s early contest at Texas Christian University, Libby Murphy and Hailey Hunt found the net as the Broncos knocked off No. 19 Kingwood (Humble, Texas). Texas Tech commit Caity Heap controls play in the midfield, creating chances for the forwards while Rice commit Kara Dugall, a goalkeeper, has yet to allow a goal.

EARLY SURPRISE: Colleyville Heritage’s lofting national ranking is appearing too high following the team’s first two matches. The surprise of last year had climbed to No. 3 this year before play started, however a first-round draw with Georgetown (Texas) and a Friday loss to Central (San Angelo, Texas) likely will end Heritage’s run in the POWERADE FAB 50.

GETTING DEFENSIVE: A total of eight goals were scored in the first six matches played at Texas Christian University on Friday. Every contest featured a shutout. The other 12 contests played through mid-day at the other four venues, there were only three shutouts.

PLAYERS OF THE DAY
Lindsey Harris, Westlake (Austin, Texas): Harris, a goalkeeper who is committed to North Carolina, delivered a few clutch saves en route to Westlake's 1-0 victory over Nolan Catholic (Fort Worth, Texas).

Mackenzie Kligmann, St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.): Kligman, a sweeper, anchored an Aquinas defense that gave Allen (Texas) few chances in a 1-0 result for the nationally ranked Florida squad.

IMPACT FRESHMAN
Kendall Ritchie, Westlake (Austin, Texas): Ritchie was smooth on the ball and created a few chances. However, late in the game, she unleashed a left-footed rocket that ended up as the lone goal as Westlake defeated Nolan Catholic (Fort Worth, Texas).

OVERHEARD
Kingwood’s trip to the National Elite Prep Showcase was anything but usual. After having a series of bus problems on the first three hours of a four-hour drive from Houston to Fort Worth, the coach made a decision to stop in Corsicana, Texas, to rent a pair of 15-passenger vehicles and complete the journey. … Coppell junior Paige Jacobs is playing for the No. 2-ranked high school team in the nation, yet lives in the shadow of her 18-year-old older brother, Colin Jacobs, who was drafted by the NHL Buffalo Sabres this past summer.

FORT WORTH, Texas -- When POWERADE FAB 50 No. 4 Ursuline (Dallas, Texas) and No. 18 American Heritage-Delray (Delray Beach, Fla.) met Thursday in the opening match at the National Elite Prep Showcase, something had to give between a pair of teams that were a combined 27-0. It ended up being American Heritage-Delray’s defense.

Boston College commit Jana Jeffrey had a goal and one assist and Candace Johnson delivered a strong performance to lead Ursuline (11-0) to a 3-0 victory, handing American Heritage-Delray its first loss in 18 matches. “This was a bit of an eye-opener for us,” Delray coach Steve Burgess confessed. “We’ve had a good run in Florida for the last eight years or so, and now we’re getting to see what it’s all about at this level.”

For Ursuline, the result starts to make amends for last year’s showing at this event, where the then highly regarding private school program hobbled to a 1-3 showing and fell from the national rankings. “Last year, we didn’t do well here,” said Johnson, whose centering passing early in the match led to a goal by Kellie Schnurr, before Johnson scored a goal of her own. “We wanted to make a statement this year with a decisive win.”

Throughout the day, ESPNHS will update the top team and individual performances from Thursday’s opening round.

PLAYER OF THE DAY
Jana Jeffrey, Ursuline Academy: The Boston College-bound forward assisted the team’s second goal and scored the third as the Bears humbled American Heritage-Delray 3-0.

IMPACT FRESHMEN
Mayra Pelayo, American Heritage-Delray: Pelayo is a technically sound player who demonstrated great skill on the ball. Coach Steve Burgess said Pelayo is still getting used to the speed of play since the high school game is filled with players two and three years older. Pelayo plays club soccer for magicJack.

It's only one tournament lasting 48 hours in Ft. Worth, Texas, but it ultimately will play a major role in the POWERADE FAB 50 rankings for the rest winter high school season.

This week's National Elite Prep Showcase, formerly known as the Nolan Showcase, features nine teams currently ranked in the Top 25 -- including the current 1, 2, 3 and 4 squads.

Multiple programs from California and Florida join a Texas-dominated field for the most nationally significant event of the season, which starts Thursday and wraps up Satuday.

From Florida, St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) used this event to jumpstart a national No. 1 ranking in 2011. The Raiders return with an undefeated record in 2012. Undefeated American Heritage-Delray (Delray Beach, Fla.) enters this year's event with a chance to earn even more national respect. Meanwhile, Rosary (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Murrieta Valley (Murrieta, Calif.) will look to make a statement for California soccer.

The homestanding Texas programs, led by No. 1 Boyd (McKinney, Texas), will need to roll the out-of-state opponents to maintain a strangehold on the top of the national rankings.

There is a slight adjustment in the 2012 NEPS Schedule that is reflected on the 12/19/11 schedule update. An email will also be sent to all the coaches on those changes. The schedule that is one the website will ALWAYS be the official schedule.

The teams that will be affected by this schedule change are Flower Mound, Amarillo, Georgetown, Midland, Antonian, St. Stephen's, Murrieta, and Nolan.

There were also adjustments made to HOME and AWAY teams so make sure you check your schedule to she who will be the home team. Each team will play 4 games.

The ESPNHS Soccer Challenge is a point system for high school teams that take out-of-state competition through various existing tournaments, events and out-of-state trips. High school teams earn points for various levels of competition and opponents, the points are divided by the number of matches played and the teams are ranked based on point averaged. Teams must compete in any of the identified qualifying tournaments and/or play a minimum of two out-of-state matches, which cannot include local competition for schools located near state borders.

600+ Wins for Aquinas' Giron

Carlos Giron, St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.)

To put Carlos Giron’s national-best 645 wins in perspective, a rookie coach in Hawaii, playing the maximum 19 matches, would need to piece together 36 straight undefeated, untied seasons before matching Giron’s win total. Daunting? Yep. That's a lot like St. Thomas Aquinas’ program has been for most opponents for 26 years under Giron. Sure, the days of absolute dominance – such as the team’s run of 119 straight wins during the mid-1990s -- may be gone, but that hasn’t changed the fact the Raiders remain a force in Florida Class 5A. Giron has a chance this year to put himself 50 wins ahead of the No. 2 coach on the all-time, Paul Heenehan of Ramapo (Franklin Lakes, N.J.). Ramapo recently concluded its fall season.

A Look Back: All-Time Greatest Nolan Showcase Matches

2003  Nolan Catholic vs. No. 1 Colleyville Heritage
Colleyville Heritage had Caitlin Kennedy, Jessica Maxwell and Michelle Makasini and were ranked No. 1 in both the FAB 50 and the NSCAA polls. The match was played at Doskocil Stadium at Nolan Catholic and it was back and forth. Colleyville Heritage owned the majority of the play but Nolan Catholic was very organized and got numbers behind the ball very well and attacked very. The first goal came off a set piece about 40 yards out for Nolan Catholic and they were able to flick a ball on for an oncoming Nolan forward, Megan Jagger. The score was 1-0 at halftime and then just into the second half Nolan scored again to go up by two goals - the goal was off a nice entry pass in behind and the Nolan midfielder Savannah Campbell got on the end of it and served the ball nice and low and it was knocked in by Texas A&M standout, Becky Olson. The game was back and forth for the remainder of the game and Nolan was able to hold on to the lead and win 2-0.  

2004  Colleyville Heritage vs. Ursuline Academy
The very next year Colleyville Heritage made it to the final once again but now they were up against Ursuline Academy. This match was the battle of private school's best and public school's best. Ursuline scored early off a corner and really had several other chances as the game went on and Colleyville Heritage could not get their rhythm until about the last five minutes of the match when they put all sorts of pressure on Ursuline and ended up scoring off a counter which was saved and then the rebound found the back of the next for a 1-1 tie. The match went into OT and nothing much happened during extra time so the match went into penalties. The shootout was from the spot and it was a good one - the first two shooters from each team converted and then Ursuline missed. Colleyville Heritage went on to score twice more and had a chance to win the game with their fifth shooter but the Ursuline GK saved the shot. Ursuline won in with the seventh sudden death shooter.  

2006  Nolan Catholic vs. No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas
The match was the 8 p.m. game and the weather was perfect. The match was televised locally and there was a crowd on hand of about 500 people. The matched started with Nolan taking a bit of a beating but then it settled down into a pretty good match where all the play was in the midfield and in the 17th minute Nolan built out of the back and played into the midfield and up to the two targets - the targets played off each other and got in behind and TCU Soccer Buzz All-Central Region, Jackie Torda scored off an assist from current junior midfielder Chelsea Heimann. Nolan finished the half off very string putting together many other string opportunities. The second half St. Thomas was very good - during the first 15 minutes they created about six corners and put Nolan on their heels for most of the half. Nolan did pick it up midway through and started getting themselves into the attack a bit more and that is when St. Thomas struck on their first goal of the match on a counter and then about five minutes later in the 75th minute it took the lead off a corner. Nolan threw everything forward and for the next five minutes created several chances to even the game and in the 79th minute was awarded a penalty shot when the current Nolan junior forward Mallory Baum was taken down in the box and she attempted to spin a defender. Then she was a freshman and took it upon herself to take the game tying penalty as time expired. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.  

2006  Coppell vs. No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas
This was one of the best games I have seen but the fact that there was no score made it rank below some of the other games. This game was back and forth - St. Thomas Aquinas' Kiki Bosio was all over the place as well as Coppell's Jasmine Avant. The speed of the game was impressive. Not many chances on goal but the midfield play was fun to watch - a lot of creative play, combination play, and hard tackles. The match went into PKs as well and Coppell had a chance to win the game on the fifth shooter and most of the shots were saved by both keepers. The St. Thomas Gk saved the shot and in sudden death St. Thomas, which was led by Caitlin Miskel, won the game on the next shot.

2011 San Clemente (CA) vs St. Thomas Aquinas (FL)
The marquee match Saturday pitted San Clemente and St. Thomas Aquinas in a morning contest that was played in a light drizzle. Aquinas, which had defeated FAB 50 No. 1 McKinney Boyd (McKinney, Texas) a day earlier, was 18-0 and had not allowed a goal all season. The Raiders’ streak was snapped with 9:42 left in the first half when an unmarked Coxe one-timed a shot past the Aquinas keeper. The play started when Farris served a ball from the left wing the top of the 6-yard box, intended for Tessa Andujar. Aquinas’ keeper charged off her line and disrupted the cross, but the ball ended up at the feet of Coxe, who right-footed it into the right side of the goal. Aquinas pressured San Clemente late in the second half, but could not get the equalizer, ending the Showcase with a 3-1 record. By virtue of its win over Boyd, Aquinas was considered the No. 2 team at the event.

Winter All-American Lists | First-Team Player Bios | State-By-State Winter All-Stars

Twelve of the 36 players on the ESPNHS All-American Teams participated in the Nolan Showcase in 2011.

The winter high school girls' season might be limited in the number of states that play, but the depth of talent is staggering.

This year's ESPNHS Winter All-America selections, 36 in all, features 33 players who have committed to NCAA Division I programs, one headed to an NCAA Division II power and a pair of juniors who have yet to commit. No fewer than 10 of the players have been part of the U.S. youth national pool.

Five ESPNHS Winter first-team members led their team to state or sectional titles. All 12 players helped their teams into the POWERADE FAB 50 for at least one week this season.

California led the way with 17 selections, followed by Texas with 12, Florida with five and Arizona and Hawaii with one each.

The ESPNHS Winter All-America team is compiled using a combination of players’ high school performance, coaching and media recommendations, and recruiting details. These players hail from winter-playing high school soccer programs. ESPN RISE waits until after all local all-star teams are named before releasing its All-America list in order to provide adequate research time.

The 2012 National Elite Prep Showcase will bring together the top girls high school teams from around the country. Teams from Texas, California, Florida, Arizona, and Louisiana will be represented. It is a true college showcase for high school soccer. Formerly the Nolan Showcase, the National Elite Prep Showcase is in its 10th year. The Showcase is touted as the top event for high school soccer in Texas if not in the country. Last year’s event featured 6 of the TOP 10 teams in the country and 10 of the 14 teams in the event were ranked nationally in the TOP 30. The National Elite Prep Showcase always helps in producing the Nation’s #1 team. The top players in the country have participated in the event over the past 10 years: US National Team Player, Olympic Gold Medalist, and WPS stand-out, Amy Rodriguez (Santa Margarita), US U-21 National Team Player and UNC’s Jessica Maxwell (Colleyville Heritage), UNC’s Courtney Jones (Monte Vista), the University of Florida’s Jazmyne Avant (Coppell), BYU’s Lauren Anderson (Monte Vista), TCU’s Alex Mechalske (Nolan), TCU’s Ashley Jones (Tyler Lee), Texas’ Kendall Frizzell (Tyler Lee) and University of Kentucky’s Laura Burton (Amador Valley) participated in 08, as well as Notre Dame recruit Jazmine Hall (Marcus). You'll have to forgive the Ursuline (Texas) Academy girls soccer program if it feels a little aggrieved, despite winning what should be a national-record 21st straight state title on Saturday. The Bears have good reason to be upset: Despite the fact that their 21 consecutive titles is a national record, it's not being credited as a nationwide mark because of the association in which Ursuline competes.

As pointed out by the Dallas Morning News' Corbett Smith, Ursuline competes in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools -- TAPPS -- just as all other private schools across the state do. That stands in sharp contrast to most states across the country, which integrate public schools and private schools in the same athletic governing body.

As it turns out, in states that have separate public and private athletic organizations, only the public leagues are considered when determining historic records. Therefore, the 21 trophies currently ensconced in the Ursuline athletic facilities are worth little more than two decades of bragging rights over other all-girls schools, according to the folks at the National Sports Record Book.

According to Smith, Portland (Ore.) Catlin Gable High holds the record for most consecutive girls soccer titles with 11. That's right, the current record-holders have been outdone by the Bears by a whopping decade worth of state titles, yet are still recognized as the most successful streak-owning girls soccer program in the nation.

If there was any question that Ursuline was deserving of recognition, the Bears likely answered those questions in their title-game victory. After falling behind by a goal in the early moments, Ursuline responded with four consecutive goals to run roughshod over runner-up Fort Worth (Texas) Nolan Catholic School, 4-1.

"At this point in the season it's more about emotion then about technical or tactical play," Ursuline coach Jamie Cantrell told the Morning News. "We knew if we got down one, we trained for it."

At that point in the season, Cantrell's team has known exactly what to do time and again. It's just time that the rest of the country acknowledged its greatness.

Congrats to this years participants and congrats to Ursuline Academy who won their 21st State Title and to Nolan Catholic who was State-Runner Up to Ursuline for the 11th straight year. Congrats to Hockaday who took the SPC Title.

St. Thomas Aquinas finished as Florida Class 5A state champion. Sarah Guensler and Ana Cuffia scored as St. Thomas Aquinas beat Newsome, 2-0, in the state final. The Raiders outscored opponents 146-2 with 24 shutouts by senior Hofstra signee Julia Kantor. One of the goals allowed came in their only defeat, a 1-0 loss to San Clemente (San Clemente, Calif.). Aquinas holds victories over Texas power McKinney Boyd (McKinney, Texas).

San Clemente look ahead to a CIF Title as they opened the first round of the playoffs with a 5-0 win over Orange Lutheran. San Clemente faces Yucaipa tonight.

All the other Texas public schools are in the middle of district play and we wish each and everyone of you the best as the season moves on.

The nation's #1 team, McKinney Boyd, is down 1-0 to Florida's, St. Thomas Aquinas at half on a Julie Schumacher goal - her third of the event. Both teams coming off opening day victories. Although we are 10 degrees warmer than opening day, it is still a bit chilly with a cool south breeze.

Aquinas is unbeaten at 16-0 on the season while Boyd is also unbeaten at 1-0 as the Texas schools started games on Thursday.

While the Tri-Valley Classic and Excalibur high school girls’ soccer events put order to California winter state rankings, it’s the Nolan Showcase in Texas that ties together the country.

This year’s event, being held at six venues in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, features eight of the current Top 25 teams in the POWERADE FAB 50. In addition to No. 1 Boyd (McKinney, Texas), No. 2 Coppell (Coppell, Texas) and No. 3 Ursuline Academy (Dallas, Texas), No. 24 San Clemente (San Clemente, Calif.) and No. 16 St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) are part of the mix.

The following is a quick overview of this year’s event, which starts Thursday in Fort Worth:

WHAT’S AT STAKE: The POWERADE FAB 50 No. 1 ranking may be settled on the field this week.

KICKOFF CLASSIC: One of the event’s marquee matches will be held on the opening night, under the lights at Texas Christian University as No. 1 Boyd opens its season against No. 3 Ursuline. Ursuline has the benefit of entering the contest having already played 12 regular-season matches.

MAJOR PLAYERS: In addition to the five teams listed above, No. 5 Plano West (Plano, Texas), No. 10 Clear Lake (Houston, Texas), No. 11 Seven Lakes (Katy, Texas), No. 26 Martin (Arlington, Texas), Allen (Allen, Texas), Plano East (Plano, Texas) and St. Stephen’s (Austin, Texas) figure to be contenders for bracket titles.

WHAT TO WATCH: Florida’s reputation will be on the line in the form of St. Thomas Aquinas. American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) traveled to California for the Tri-Valley Classic and promptly returned home after an 0-4 showing. If Aquinas does not show well in Texas, it might prove that the balance of power in high school girls’ soccer is west of the Mississippi River – either in Texas or California.

RANKINGS SHAKE-UP: Several Texas teams that start play Thursday have climbed artificially high in the FAB 50 simply because they are undefeated – while Florida and California programs have already played their way into a ranking order. Currently, seven Texas teams hold Top 10 spots. That will certainly change after this week’s Nolan Showcase as the Texas teams will start to play their way into order.

PLAYERS OF NOTE: Coppell senior midfielder Chioma Ubogagu (Stanford), McKinney Boyd senior forward Kelley Monoque and senior defender Meghan Streight (both to Texas A&M), Southlake Carroll defender Taylor Schneider (Notre Dame), St. Thomas Aquinas senior midfielder Ashley Oswald (Vanderbilt), Nolan Catholic senior Alexis Rios (Mexico’s under-17 national team) and San Clemente senior midfielder Frannie Coxe (Yale).

CLOSING CONTEST: Perhaps the most important Nolan Showcase match takes place Saturday at Nolan Catholic when St. Thomas Aquinas takes on San Clemente.

UPDATES: ESPN RISE will deliver daily scores and stories from the Nolan Showcase, and updates throughout the day. Matches start Thursday at 2 p.m. locally and run through 9:30 p.m. Games start at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

The Schedule for the 2011 Showcase will be released by the end of the week. With allt he out-of-state teams making arrangements and some teams involved in finals we have had to make several adjustments to the schedule.

The schedule is completed but we are double and triple checking to make sure everything is in order to be published.

SHOWCASE FEATURES NATIONS TOP TEAMS

The 2011 Nolan Showcase hosted by Nolan Catholic and Southlake Carroll once again feature the nations best teams and will help determine the nations #1 team. "It is where the best teams come to play," commented showcase co-director Jay Fitzgerald.

ESPNRise has released the national rankings for the 2010-2011 known at the Powerade FAB 50 National Rankings. The Nolan Showcase will feature 5 teams that are in the Top 10 and 4 of those teams are in the TOP 5.

See below teams that are ranked in the TOP 10 that will once again be participating in this years showcase...

#1 McKinney Boyd (McKinney, Texas)
McKinney Boyd came within a whisker of an beaten season last year, losing in the state final to The Woodlands. This year's team could be every bit as strong as last year's. Kelley Monogue (Texas A&M), Meghan Streight (Texas A&M), Kara Dugall and Lauren Katada (Texas-El Paso) return from last year's 28-1-3 team.

#2 Coppell (Coppell, Texas)
Chioma Ubogagu, a Stanford commit, highlights a team loaded with talent. Thirteen players return from last year's 19-win team. The team will be tested at the Nolan Showcase and in matches against highly competitive District 6-5A league opponents.

#4 Ursuline (Dallas, Texas)
Ursuline returns 16 players from last year's 17-1 team that won the state's private school state title for the 20th straight year. Emily Hoffend and Jana Jeffrey have committed to Boston College. Katie Hosea (Arkansas State), Jordan Grimes (McNeese State), Natalie Huggins (Baylor) and Ali Alcott (Belmont) are also bound for NCAA Division I programs.

#5 San Clemente (San Clemente, Calif.)
Yale commit Frannie Coxe, the reigning CIF-Southern Section Division I Offensive Player of the Year, forward Tessa Andujar and Alex Reisinger (Lafayette) return for the 2010 CIF-Southern Region runners-up.

#10 Plano West (Plano, Texas)
With youth national team keeper Abby Smith in net, Plano West is in every game. The program underwent a youth movement last year which resulted in four freshmen making all-district first-team and then-sophomore Smith earning the Defensive Player of the Year award. Texas commit Whitney Janes was a first-team pick, as well. In total, Plano West brings back six all-league players.

The 2011 Red Bull Nolan Showcase will be played on January 13th-15th, 2011. The showcase will again feature the nations best teams. The Battle for #1 Continues Here... The event will once again run Thursday through Saturday. A lot of exciting additions to the event to come in 2011.

Thursday Matchs at TCU Indoor and Friday/Saturday Schedules Adjusted

We have done everything we can to adjust the schedules to where we play games during the middle of the day – NO EARLY GAMES BEFORE 12 and NO LATE GAMES AFTER 5. So the sun will be out and with the forecast saying no wind it should be OK on Friday with the adjusted game times. Some teams may play just 3 games but we will attempt to give the teams that request 4 games, that 4th game. Priority will be given to the out of town teams on the 4th game.

We are excited about the event and we hope everyone else is as well.

I will be sending out the revised schedule for Friday and Saturday later tonight and the website will reflect those changes as well.

THURSDAY SCHEDULE MOVING INDOOR - TCU's Sam Baugh Indoor Football Facility

Games will be 50 minutes long (25 min halves) and will be played on the hour starting at 8am and the last game starting at 11pm as we need to get 16 games played in one location. The games will not count toward showcase standings – only games 2,3, and 4 will count toward final standings. FRIDAY and SATURDAY games will be played as scheduled but there still can be adjustments to those 2 days.

We have done everything we can at this point and just want to give your teams and your players an opportunity to play in front of the college coaches.

Showcase Brackets Announced

The 2010 Red Bull Nolan Showcase Presented by JATO brackets are announced. These brackets are subject to change. Schedule will be released on Monday, November 30th.

Who's #1 according to ESPNRise? The 2 top high school girls showcases in the country are right around the corner. The Tri-Valley Classic in December in Daneville, CA and the Nolan Showcase in January in Fort Worth, TX will help determine the the nations #1 team. Los Lomas, San Ramon, and Monte Vista host the California Showcase and Nolan Catholic and Southlake Carroll host the Texas Showcase. Tri-Valley is in its 8th year while the Nolan Showcase enters its 9th year.

The Tri-Valley Classic includes 9 of the Top 50 teams in the country, including Nolan Catholic at #15, whereas the Nolan Showcase includes 8 but 2 Top 5 teams, 3 Top 10 teams, 4 Top 20 teams, and 6 Top 30 teams. Both events have an impressive field of teams.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT - Southlake Carroll

In with the 17s for World Cup qualifying, then with the 20s, and now with the full team - Southlake Carroll's Monica Alvarado is looking for her first cap with the Mexican National Team. The 17s advanced to the 2008 CONCACAF U17 Championship in Trinidad & Tobago. Alvarado continues to move up the National Team ranks and will use this opportunity not only to secure a spot on the full team for the upcoming FIFA World Cup but also to prepare herself for her freshman year at Mississippi State in the Fall of 2009.

Alvarado is an extremely dynamic central midfielder that has the ability to take over a game adding that extra dimension that is indicative to the success of her team. She helped her Lady Dragons to a 2008 UIL Class 5A State Championship while also guiding her FC Dallas 91 club team to a Southern Regionals championship match before losing out 1-0 to eventual National Champion, Dallas Texans 91 Red. Alvarado is a four-time 5-5A First Team All-District selection and the 2008 Midfielder of the Year for Southlake Carroll High School's Head Coach, Matt Colvin.

Alvarado is one of several players that have participated in the Red Bull Nolan Showcase that has National Team experience.

January 7th-9th, 2010 teams will be coming from all over the country to showcase themselves in front of college coaches and to prove they are some of the most competitive teams in the Nation. Red Bull, NIKE, and ESPN Rise will all be involved once again.

The 2010 RED BULL NOLAN SHOWCASE will bring together the top girls high school teams from around the country. Teams from Texas, California, Florida, Arizona, and Louisiana will be represented. It is a true college showcase for high school soccer. The Nolan Showcase is touted as the top event for high school soccer in Texas if not in the country. Each year the event features several of the TOP 10 teams in the country. Last year, 8 of the 20 teams in the Invitational Division were ranked nationally in the TOP 30. The Nolan Showcase always helps in producing the Nation’s #1 team. The top players in the country have participated in the event over the past 7 years: Gatordae Player of the Year, US National Team Player, Olympic Gold Medalist, and WPS #1 Draft Pick, Amy Rodriguez (Santa Margarita) and US U-21 National Team Player and UNC’s Jessica Maxwell (Colleyville Heritage). UNC’s Courtney Jones (Monte Vista), the University of Florida’s Jazmyne Avant (Coppell), BYU’s Lauren Anderson (Monte Vista), TCU’s Alex Mechalske (Nolan), Texas’ Kendall Frizzell (Tyler Lee) and University of Kentucky’s Laura Burton (Amador Valley) participated in 08, as well as Notre Dame recruit Jazmine Hall (Marcus). US under-16 National Pool Player, Whitney Jaynes (Plano West) and Lexi Harris (Plano West) were also in attendance. Jaynes and Harris were both headed to New Zealand with the National Team following the event. Youth National Team past participants include Chioma Ubogagu (Coppell) - U17 US National Team Pool, Taylor Schneider (Carroll) - U16 US National Team Pool, Alina Garziamendez (Ursuline) - U17 Mexiacn National Team, and Monica Alvarado (Carroll) - U20 Mexican National Team. Other notable showcase participants were University of Texas standouts Caitlin Kennedy (Colleyville Heritage) and Kendall Campisi (Ursuline), as well as LSU’s Michelle Makasini (Colleyville Heritage), Texas A&M’s Becky Olson (Nolan) University of Virginia’s Caitlin Miskel (St. Thomas Aquinas), Stanford standout Kiki Bosio (Santa Margarita), USC National Champion JJ Johnson (Santa Margarita), and TCU’s Jackie Torda (Nolan).

Coppell makes statement with win over McKinney Boyd

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The scoreboard read: Coppell 2, McKinney Boyd 0.

Coppell topped McKinney Boyd at the Nolan Showcase on Friday afternoon.
But the truth is, the clash of the ESPN RISE FAB 50-ranked girls' soccer teams Friday at the Red Bull/Nolan Showcase was anything but a one-sided affair.

Coppell (Texas) scored in the first half with the wind at its back and held on for dear life in the second half before scoring a second goal in stoppage time to seal the victory. The result pushed FAB 50 No. 10 Coppell to first in Group E, followed by No. 35 Boyd (McKinney, Texas), with No. 50 Heritage (Colleyville, Texas) a close third. Any of those three teams could snag the group title in Saturday's final round of action.

In other key matches Friday evening, Lake Highlands (Dallas) surged to the top of Group A with a 2-1 win over Nolan Catholic (Fort Worth, Texas), Hockaday School (Dallas) moved ahead of Martin (Arlington, Texas) in Group B, Ursuline Academy (Dallas) clinched the Group C title with a 1-0 victory over Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas) and Keller (Texas) took over the top spot in Group D with a 2-1 victory over Plano West (Plano, Texas).

Keller and Lake Highlands are the surprise teams of the event so far, each carrying a 2-0-1 record into the final day. Keller has a chance to lay claim to the top overall showing if it defeats Ursuline Academy, the third -- and only other -- undefeated team in the event.
The Nolan Showcase has 27 participants, with 20 competing in the invitational event. The showcase format does not offer a championship match but has a points system in place to award the highest finisher in each group.

Of the eight FAB 50 teams competing in the showcase, three are in Group E, and Coppell now controls its destiny going into Saturday's finale against Mayfair (Lakewood, Calif.).
"We knew going with the wind would be a factor, so we were pressing to get a goal," Coppell coach Chris Stricker said of Friday's game. Although the temperature was in the high 70s, a strong wind hampered play throughout the day at Texas Christian University, one of the four sites of the showcase.

Coppell sophomore sensation Chioma Ubogagu started -- and finished -- the Cowgirls' first goal. After collecting the ball at midfield lat in the first half, she passed it to Laura Sadler, who in turn sent it to Alyssa Diggs. Diggs faked to her left, creating enough space to get off a shot that was not cleanly handled by the Boyd keeper. Ubogagu, rushing the goal on the play, gathered the loose ball and easily scored.

McKinney Boyd took control in the second half as it played with the wind at its back. Boyd had a pair of shots hit the post, and plenty of dangerous scoring chances created by Oklahoma commit Emily Reid ended up in the arms of Coppell keeper Kailey Hicks.
"It was unfortunate we didn't put one in," Boyd coach Jimmie Lankford said. "You do everything right and sometimes you can't score. … It's like there was cellophane around the goal."
In the final minute, and having just dodged a Boyd scoring chance, Coppell earned a corner kick. Sadler sent the kick to the middle of the penalty box, where Kristen Hart was ready to finish the play -- and the match.

News and Notes
Player of the Day: Alison McCabe, Keller. On a day with several multigoal scorers, McCabe's two goals stood above the rest. Her first score helped secure Keller's 3-0 win over St. Thomas More (Lafayette, La.). Her second goal proved to be the game-winner in Keller's 2-1 victory over FAB 50 No. 3 Plano West. Keller enters the final day as one of only three undefeated teams in the showcase. Freshman of the Day: Maggie Fobare, Hockaday School. Fobare scored a goal and assisted on the other three goals as Hockaday defeated Midland 4-0 to move into first place in its group. Hockaday won its second match Friday, further securing its top spot heading into Saturday's finale against Plano West. In the Stands: University of Texas coach Chris Petruccelli was in attendance, not only to watch the top prospects but also to root for his daughter, Garielle. Garielle is a freshman playing on the St. Stephen's Episcopal team.

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Grapevine girls' soccer team reinforced its reputation as giant-killers Thursday in the opening-day action at the Red Bull/Nolan Showcase.
Grapevine knocked off FAB 50 No. 2 Marcus 2-1 on a late goal by senior Courtney Heimlich at Nolan Catholic High School.

In other key first-round matches, the grass at Texas Christian University's Garvey-Rosenthal slowed Coppell's attack as No. 50 Colleyville Heritage edged No. 10 Coppell 2-1. At Nolan Catholic, No. 35 McKinney Boyd jumped out to a 4-0 lead before finishing a 4-1 victory over Tyler Lee; No. 26 Ursuline Academy scored four unanswered goals for a 5-1 win over Mayfair (Calif.); and No. 7 Nolan Catholic used a second-half strike by Morgan Ullman to edge No. 15 Southlake Carroll 1-0.

Last year Grapevine opened the showcase with a 3-2 win over then No. 1 Coppell. The Mustangs used that victory to vault into a FAB 50 ranking and ultimately a 20-5-0 season that ended with a playoff loss to eventual state champion Southlake Carroll. "We come in expecting this,” second-year coach Ryan Davis said. "We believe we can play with anybody.”
